The man who I model my dress attire after has revealed via twitter, and MTV News that he’s going to be directing a new movie based on.. Hold for dramatic pause.. a Warren Zevon song.
HIT SOMEBODY…
A hockey song!
Smith is teaming with the co-writer of the song and writer of Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom.
Albom and Zevon, who’s most famous song “WEREWOLVES OF LONDON” was played non stop in my household by my father when I was a child, wrote the song before Zevon’s death in 2003. Smith, who is a massive hockey nut, and if any one ever listens to his podcast, knows that he worships the holy ground of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. The theme isn’t something new to Smith, as hockey has been a running theme in most of Smiths films. So its seems natural that the man would want to do a film about the subject.
The movie, set to start filming after Smith finishes work on “A Couple of Dicks”, with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, which would be around 2010 or 2011. Smith says the films will be set in the 70′s in the time of the National Hockey League, towards its end days when it’s was more about the Goons fighting than the game. He also states that the film will be more dramatic in nature, with comedy sprinkled around it.
Some are saying that it might be an award contender..
Personally, this is awesome. I’m glad to see Smith start spreading his wings a bit more. The man has always been afraid to kinda move outside his bubble and aim for bigger things. The dramatic stuff is something that we’ve only got a hint of in Jersey Girl, a film that is a fantastically sweet and emotional film that got a bad rap when it came out due to the public life of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.
And if new movie news wasn’t enough to satisfy ones mad lust for Kevin Smith, not one, but TWO new comic projects were also announced.
Via his online blog, Kevin announced a new BATMAN maxi series that he’ll be writing, with his buddy Walt Flannagan doing the artwork. He did the artwork for Smiths last book, BATMAN Cacophony. Titled, Batman The Widening Gyre, it will see Smith not only work his magic with the Dark Knight, but also, create a new DCU SUPERHERO!
Smith acknowledged his tardiness with the funny books in the past, and has assured every one that the first six issue’s scripts are already in the can.
The first issue will ship sometime around August, run for 6 issues monthly, then take a half year break, and come back with the last 6. The break is to make sure that he has time to finish the series and not have a BLACK CAT/DAREDEVIL incident again with either a 3 year window or the series never finishing. Smith also released a taste of the artwork to the fans to get a good idea at what the series is going to be rocking. Looks fantastic.
If that wasn’t left field, Dynamite Entertainment has acquired the rights to the GREEN HORNET. Smith was set to do a Green Hornet movie a few years back but turned it down after scripting. Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg took over that project after Smith backed out. Dynamite approached Kevin with possibly writing the series, but didn’t have the time to do so. (Clearly!) But he did offer his un-filmed script to be adapted, much like the never materialized FREDDY vs JASON 2 script never came about was adapted into FREDDY vs JASON vs ASH mini series.
The comic will be a translation of the script, and after that, the regular series will jump off with the origins of the character. Announced for cover duties are John Cassaday, Jae Lee, David Finch, and living legend Alex Ross, who Kevin provided this first look at the cover.
Sounds like the next 3 years are going to be a busy one for the fat man in an overcoat. I for one cant get any more excited than I already am for this. (Otherwise, all the blood will rush out of my head)
