Not too far off either.
After what seemed like an eternity, Universal Pictures has finally announced a release date for Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs The World. That date: August 13th, 2010, the same day as The Expendables.
Now first off, that date means that there will be a very big push (and possible screening) of the film at this years San Diego Comic Con. This past Con, with production in high gear, there was no real movie push on Scott Pilgrim. I would bet that Universal would be doing their best to whore the hell out of this film to that crowd to build a good buzz in the last month before the film is released.
The second issue is that it’s on the same day as Sylvester Stallone’s macho 80′s love letter, The Expendables. While both films are on opposite ends of the spectrum, some feel that either film could damage the box office of both films. I would disagree with that. While there is a high male 18-36 push on Expendables, only a small percent of that would be viewing Pilgrim. That film will probably be PG-13 and aimed at the teen/geek market, a good chunk of them being women.
For me, I’ll be pulling a weekender. Scott on Friday, Expendables on Saturday, and you can be damn sure that we here at the RealmCast will be reviewing BOTH of those films when they finally hit.
