By the Eye of Thundera!
So a back in 2007, Warner Bros. green lit a Thundercats movie (mostly off the success of Transformers). The plan was for it to be a CG movie, more or less in the vein of TMNT that came out that year. Then, nothing. No word on what the hell was going on. Then a few weeks ago, a script popped up online that was apparently the screen play for the film. It was written by Paul Sopocy, who was the writer assigned to the project. The director was going to be Jerry O’Flaherty, who is a veteran art director, and thus making his directorial debut.
Then back in December, word came down that Warner Bros is no longer developing the picture. Right after that, word leaked out that Warner Bros is no longer “DIRECTLY” developing the film, but having Chase Me Productions, who are currently working on Sherlock Holmes 2, Jumper 2 (why?) Five Brothers (the Four Brothers sequel) Men In Black 3 and The Brazilian Job, do the actual producing of the project, and have WB handle distribution.
So, while there’s no definitive word on what the fuck is going on with the project, some very interesting visuals hit the net that came out of the pre production of the project. Below are director O’Flaherty’s designs for the movie. Notably, Lion-O, Mumm-Ra’s pyramid, the arks that the Thundercats come to Third Earth on, and what looks like Thundera capital. All are exceptionally appealing. As for Lion-O, I really, really dig the look. Clearly the show’s OG designs are very, em, cartoonish, so giving it a bit of a real world feel, like this one, seems right. Its a nice balance of Cat and Man, and shit, he’s even got his Claw Shield gauntlet! Unlike Transformers, that are OVERLY complicated in a forced real world look in the films, this.. works.
While its unknown when or if this project will ever get made, we’ll always have these designs to ponder the What If for a Thundercats film.
