Makes sense.
One of the unfortunate casualties of the Disney buy out of Marvel was that the really fucking good Spectacular Spider-Man, got shit canned. The show started out looking a bit on the kiddy side, but under the watchful gaze of the overly talented Greg Wiseman, (the Joss Whedon of the cartoon world), it turned into a surprise hit of sorts. Excellent storytelling, tight continuity, and shit, fight scenes cooler than this side of DragonBall Z. So sad.
But, wait a minute? Isn’t there a new Spider-Man movie coming out soon? That usually means “cartoon tie in”. With the new film being based on Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel said, “Why not an Ultimate Spidey toon?” Makes sense. So it was proclaimed that Disney XD will be airing an all new Spider-Man toon based on the Ultimate storyline.
Set to air in 2011, along side the Mighty Avengers, on Disney XD. Marvel Animation president, Eric S. Rollman, stated:
“Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth.”
I say. Eh. Spectacular Spider-Man already had an Ultimate feel to it. It was Peter in high school. Some of the villains origins were re worked to fit the new story lines. Hell, Eddie Brock and Peter were good friend starting out in the show, kind of like the Ultimate version. If they want teen angst drama, there was the competition between Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane over Peter. So, saying that Ultimate Spidey toon is going to provide something new is kind of moot.
Ah, who knows until we actually see some footage. I’ve made it known I’m not the biggest fan of the Ultimate Spider-Man line. It’s ok, comic wise, but the stories seem just kind of bland and lifeless to be translated to other media, IE, film and TV.
