Just.. what the hell?
Robert Zemekis has been threatening the public with a sequel to his epic 1988 classic, Who Framed Roger Rabbit for years now. Since the advent of his new motion capture toys that he now uses for making movies, the coal that’s been simmering under his ass has reignited with a new passion. In the last few months, he’s gone on record stating that Roger Rabbit 2 is a very real possibility, and Disney is keen on it.
HeyYouGuys caught up with the star of the first film, the great Bob Hoskins, and got this quote from the man.
‘Zemekis said he’s going to do it like a Christmas Carol, but I’m 67 years old! I’ll look like a cartoon at that point! If they do it, I’m in!
So how would this all work? Zemekis hasn’t made a full live action film in ten years. His last being Cast Away. Hoskins pretty much confirming what Zemekis has been saying, that they’re going full mo cap on the film. That is were the groaning comes in. The two problems with this is that the first Roger Rabbit was a beautiful mix of live action and animation. It was part of the soul of that film. You actually believed that Toon Town existed in our world. Second, Zemekis, with three of these mo cap films under his belt, still has a lot of learning to do. Polar Express was lifeless, Beowulf was far better but still needed work, and I haven’t seen Christmas Carol yet, but I’ve heard it’s on par with Beowulf. He needs to take a page out James Cameron’s book, who managed to master mo cap with Avatar in one fell swoop. Add cartoon characters to mo cap actors, and it’s going to be a very weird hodgepodge of a film.
I know it’s the guy that gave us Back to the Future, but he’s kinda gone mad with power over the last decade, and I think his filmmaking has suffer from it.
In related news, it appears that Disney has been tinkering with a Roger Rabbit sequel for quite a while. This test footage of a fully CGI Roger Rabbit for a proposed sequel from all the way back in 1998 has popped up on the net. It’s fascinating to say the least.

It’s so damn clean. Yes, it’s CG,, an shiny, but I kinda still like the original the best.
