(Update) Has Marc Webb’s SPIDER-MAN 3D found it’s Mary Jane? No he hasn’t

Update: Turns out, Marc Webb has not found his Mary Jane.  He’s found his Gwen Stacy.  Yes, that’s right, Emma Stone has been cast in Spider-Man 3D as Gwen Stacy.  Here’s the statement released by Webb.

The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice.  At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl.  Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen (Emma) is also a natural blonde.”

I had no idea that Stone was a natural blond.  So, In many ways, this works.  I’m fully behind this casting now that I know that Stone is Gwen instead of MJ.  She fit’s Gwen’s free spirit style more than a sassy Mary Jane.  See the original story below.

Interesting choice none the less

Marc Webb, the irony of a dude named Webb directing  the new 3D Spider-Man movie is still funny to me, might have his Peter Parker in the guise of actor Andrew Garfield. That begs the question. What of the rest of the cast of characters?  We know that the film is going to take place around Pete’s high school years (even though Garfield is nearly 30) and his formative years as Spidey (something we already saw in the first film).  We also know that Pete won’t be starting off with Mary Jane as his first love interest in the film, but Gwen Stacy instead.  That doesn’t mean that MJ won’t be in the film.  In fact, we know she’s going to be in the movie, and it appears that Sony is making to offer to this bright young actress as we speak.

Superbad/Zombieland/Easy A star Emma Stone looks to be tapped as the fiery red head that will make Peter’s tights even tighter, according to Deadline.  Stone has been on something of a roll as of late, with Easy A being a moderate success not just at the box office, but also with the critics.  She’s certainly been winning people over, and seems to be picking the right rolls instead of falling into the horrid cliche of crap teen films that most actresses do.  While I do like Emma Stone, and believe me, she’s a step up from Kirsten Dunst, I’m not sure she fully fits the Mary Jane roll.  Sure, she can play that feisty girl that basically told Peter that he won the lottery with her being a hot chick willing to throw his nerdy ass a bone, but she’s got that smokers voice and a more distinctive face than what Mary Jane is known to have.  This is just me being skeptical mind you.

I still honestly can’t believe that this film is getting made.  It seems like a weird dream.  Add that there’s a rumor going around that the fat guy from Boogie Nights, one Phillip Seymour Hoffman, might be Venom in the film, and it’s becoming more like an acid trip every day.
