Super nerd mind blow out!
I wake up to possibly the most off the wall news I’ve heard since Shane Black directs Death Note. Bleeding Cool got word that Hollywood is waking up and realizing that the ICONIC (yes, I went there) series Dirty Pair, is ripe for the coveting. See, with the craze of adapting other properties into films, the one last bastion that isn’t comic books or TV show to be remade is Anime. So far, there have been a handful, at best, of Anime adaptions. Speed Racer, Dragonball. That’s been about it since the craze started. While I enjoyed Dragonball, and LOVED Speed Racer, they weren’t exactly the biggest box office draws. But some, like me, still know that there’s potential there for many adaptations if done right.
Dirty Pair is one of those.
One of the earliest main stream animes to be brought over to America in the 90′s under the title Project Eden by Streamline pictures, the Dirty Pair is wildy popular in it’s native Japan and among the hardcore in the states. If you need to be caught up on the premise, here’ good ol Wikipedia’s say:
The stories take place in the years 2138-43, by which time humanity has spread across some few thousand star systems. A corporation called the World Welfare Works Association (also WWWA or 3WA) helps member systems of the United Galactica (UG) federation deal with various planetary-scale problems, for profit, by sending agents called “trouble consultants”. Probably the most high-profile arm of the organization is the Criminal Investigations section, which works to solve crimes or mysteries. The series focuses on a team of trouble consultants in that section, named Kei and Yuri, who have a reputation for leaving a trail of destruction behind them, for which they are known publicly as the “Dirty Pair”.
Now the fact that this is now moving forward is kinda great. The big shocker is who’s possibly directing. One time ILM effects artist and the biggest Asian man in Hollywood from 2006 to 2007! The best thing on Heroes, Masi Oka is looking to make his feature directing debut with The Dirty Pair. Oka, a natural born Japanese geek, who has knowledge of both behind the scenes and in front of the camera, would solidify his geek cred with making a big budged balls movie about two hot chicks in skimpy clothing kicking ass in the future.
I think I just got wood from that last sentence.
