Things just got extra spooky at Comic-Con.

My pals over at Dread Central have come across some frighteningly good stuff about the next chapter in the Paranormal Activity series.  Add to this a very cryptic trailer and hints dropped by series creator Oren Peli? Let those sleepless night begin!

Special cards  will be distributed around the San Diego Convention Center during the show. They lead to an online service called Darren’s Timeless Memories, which takes your old VHS tapes and converts them to DVD. Go there. Visit. Look around. Can you find the trailer?

“For the third film we promise we all will be doing the very best that we can do, and we’re planning to go out of our way to please our fans and draw them more into the Paranormal Activity world,” says Oren Peli creator of the Paranormal Activity franchise and producer on Paranormal Activity 3. “The launch of this website is a new step for them to get involved more. We’ve always had a very special connection with our fanbase. When the first film debuted, no one, especially our studio, had any idea how it would turn out. There was a long stretch of time when no one was sure if there was even a market for a little homemade movie with largely unknown actors. We really had to rely on the fans discovering the movie and keep pushing the studios to open it wider and wider. We feel an enormous amount of gratitude to everyone who helped out. Our fans have been very instrumental in the success of both films thus far, and they should feel a sense of ownership in the franchise.”

Peli continues, “There are a couple of dangers involved with making a third film. You want to make sure that you give the fans and the audience the same kind of quality and scary experience that they’ve come to expect from the Paranormal Activity franchise. It has to be scary. It has to be thrilling. At the same time, though, you want to give them something fresh and different from the last two films. We have figured out the challenges that lie ahead and have a few tricks up our sleeves so hopefully our fans will be very happy. As long as you guys keep supporting these movies, and we can continue to have good ideas as to what to do in them, we will keep making them. When the creative juices dry up, we’ll stop.”

Paramount Pictures will be releasing Paranormal Activity 3 in theaters on October 21st, 2011. The Catfish team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have come aboard to helm the third entry into this mega franchise. Christopher B. Landon (writer of Paranormal Activity 2) penned the script, and as always Oren Peli and Jason Blum will be producing with Akiva Goldsman and Steven Schneider executive producing.announcements.
