Scratched Disc: October 25th 2011

It’s back!  For all your DVD needs!

Yes, it’s been a long while coming, but today, I present to you the return of Scratched Disc.  I started this piece back when the site relaunched.  Sadly, it had to be put to the side for other projects.  BUT NOT ANYMORE!  Every Tuesday we’ll be bringing you the very nerd necessities that you need, and there’s a lot this week. If your interest is peeked, chick the Amazon link below to pick up a few of these titles for your collection. So with that said:  Let’s begin shall we.

Captain America: The First Avenger

The last Marvel film before the Avengers, and it’s a doozy.  I enjoyed the hell out of Captain America.  It’s the film that Joe Johnston was born to make.  The mere fact that we have a WW2 era Captain America film is still astonishing and completely awesome at the same time. Hell, you’ll forget that Chris Evans was ever the Human Touch, and will forever think of him as Cap!

Jurassic Park The Ultimate Trilogy

On Blu Ray for the first time! Probably the third greatest trilogy of all time! It’s also Speilberg’s best film of the 90′s!  Yes, over Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.  The man gave us goddamn dinosaurs in the most realistic take ever put to film.  Jurassic Park is pushing 20 years old and the effects still hold up as some of the best today!  Lost World on the other hand, decent effort, but falls into a crevasse during the middle.  Only to be saved by the batshit nuts third act with the T-Rex in San Diego.  It also gave Vince Vaughn his big break.  Jurassic Park 3, I like allot.  Joe Johnston’s take on the series was direct and to the point.  Dinosaurs fighting and eating people.  It’s a solid survival horror film.  But the main reason to own this film is the extras.

New to Blu Ray:

“Return to Jurassic Park” — This six-part documentary features all-new interviews with the many of the cast members from all three films, the filmmakers and Steven Spielberg.

  • Dawn of a New Era
  • Making Pre-history
  • The Next Step in Evolution
  • Finding The Lost World
  • Something Survived
  • The Third Adventure

It’s Jurassic Park.  If you don’t own it now, you damn well buy it now.  Other wise, you lose geek cred big time.

Attack the Block

Easily in the top 5 films of the year.  Joe Cornish’s film about aliens attacking a British housing project and the thugs fighting them off is brilliant!  Sheer and utterly brilliant!  If you didn’t see this one the big screen you need to see it now.

Robot Chicken Season 5

I haven’t seen season 4 or this season, but I’ve been told good things.

Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes vol 3 & 4

The final volumes of what is easily the best Marvel toon ever.  Hell, it’s one of the best TV shows of last year too.  Avengers is up there with Justice League in terms of quality and story telling.  A huge bar to meet by anyone else, but damn it Avengers dose it.

Young Justice Season 1 vol 2

Seeing as Avengers season 2 hasn’t begun yet, check out the best damn toon on tv right now.  This isn’t Justice League, but it never tries to be.  Instead, Young Justice stands on it’s own as yet another high quality DC based show.

Destroy All Monsters

For the first time ever on DVD, Destroy All Monsters available with both the Japanese, International and highly sought after AIP language tracks.  For a Godzilla fan, that’s worth it’s weight in gold.  Media Blasters usually gives it their all.  There’s a nice collection of special features, but it’s Destroy All Monsters.  THE GREATEST COLLECTION OF GIANT MONSTERS ON FILM.. EVER!!!!!!

Zombie

Newly remastered for Blu Ray, I’d be in deep poo with fellow Realm Cast colleague Cesar if I didn’t mention this was out this week.

Rare Exports

It’s a fucked up Evil Santa film from Finland.  That description DEMANDS your attention.

The People vs George Lucas

Now, I haven’t’ seen this yet, but it’s a sensitive subject amongst many geeks.  George has rubbed a lot of Star Wars fans the wrong way, and thus, we get the focal point of this documentary. But many have stated that the bitching is for naught, and that perhaps the fan boys cries of “George Lucas raped our childhood” are far more over blown than they need to be.  Decide for your self.

Witchblade: Box Set

The Witchblade anime, that barely resembles the comic book it’s culled from.  But I’m putting this here because I dug the hell out of this series.  It’s on Blu Ray for less than $25 bucks.  Peep it.

That’s it for this week.   Next week will have a few picks and treats including: Cars 2, Beast Wars, Hook (blu ray) Dragon Ball Z and some Nic Cage action!
