And I now await the rewrite news
Fox is striking while he iron is hot. The studio had two of the biggest movies of the summer (well, in perspective) in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and X-Men First Class. So with the announcement that not only is Fox moving forward with a second new Apes film, but they’re gearing up work on a second film in Matthew Vaughn‘s new prequel series. How? By hiring a writer to pen the screenplay.
Who?
Why none other than Simon Kinberg. Writer of such films as Mr. and Mrs Smith, Sherlock Holmes, Jumper and the upcoming Abraham Lincoln; Vampire Hunter. Oh, he also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand. Being one of the few that enjoyed X-Men First Class. I’ll admit that it’ wasn’t the strongest of X-Men films though. First Class was a new high watermark, and allot of it was due to Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman‘s script and Vaughn‘s direction.
No word yet on if Vaughn is coming back to direct, but one would assume that Fox would want him back. With Wolverine 2 in the works and set to film next year, and (god willing) Deadpool set to shoot next year, there’s plenty to pad between the last film and the next. Matthew Vaughn seems set to direct another, non X-Men film next, but after that, who knows. I do expect to be writing news this time next year that Vaughn and Goldman will be getting to work on re writing the script.
