UPDATE: In case you hadn’t figured it out by now this article was an April Fool’s joke.
Someone just kill me now…Fumbles that’s your cue.
I was originally pretty skeptical when they gave director John Chu the job to helm G.I. Joe: Retaliation but as footage and stills started making their way to the net I started coming around to the idea. The Cobra Commander image in the trailer sealed the deal for me. Originally though I questioned him as a choice because Chu was best known not for his action films (of which there are none), but for his dance movies. He was also best known for one other movie at the time he was signed to direct G.I. Joe: Retaliation- Justin Beiber: Never Say Never.
It was largely thought that the reason Chu was even offered the job was because Paramount saw how much money Chu made for Sony with Beiber‘s Never Say Never (to date $73 million with an opening weekend of $30 million).
Now comes the news today from FilmPlay.com a chinese entertainment news site based in San Francisco that Justin Beiber will have a cameo in G.I. Joe: Retaliation as Tunnel Rat.
In an interview this past week with director John Chu he revealed to the site that his buddy Beiber would be making an appearance in the movie alongside stars like Dwayne Johnson, Ray Park and Bruce Willis. In the interview with FilmPlay John Chu states:
It seems so obvious. But there’s something about Justin that motivates me the most. I don’t know if it’s just his acting, but I do think that the he’s an amazing artist, and every time I work with him, that triggers something in my brain, and I’m more creative than I could ever be. When I feel that creativity burst, I go with it.
That “something” that motivates him the most is (I’m sure) his payday. Attaching himself to Justin Beiber has done nothing but open doors for Chu in addition to enabling him to cash out 6 & 7 digit paychecks. Expect now that you will be fighting for the armrest in theaters this summer with tweeny boppers looking to see their favorite singer in military garb.
Special thanks to my friend Charlie Wang for the heads up.
