One of my theories proved to be correct:
Avengers has screened to the public with great fan fare. Yet, no one has really said anything about the much debated alien race that Loki commands in the film. Are they Skrull? Kree? Korbinites?
No, they are none of the above.. kinda.
Joss Whedon has come out and finally settled a huge debate in geekery at the moment: WHO THE FUCK IS LOKI LEADING INTO BATTLE?
“The alien race are the Chitauri — or a version of them — because they are not one of the key races and they don’t have a storied history. That wasn’t the point. I know this debate will go on long after I’m dead. I would say it was the Kree-Skrull race.“
Pretty much, the Ultimate version of the Skrulls. But not really. Seems that my main theory of everyone involved in making this film NOT making a big deal about the aliens is that they’re just some bad guys and made up for the Avengers to pound on.
Cannon fodder.
It’s probably for the best. If they’re just throw away villains, then who cares if they’re manhandled in the film. I would assume that early on, the Skrulls were probably going to be used, but the idea probably got nixed somewhere down the line, so Whedon and Feige opened a book of oddball Marvel aliens, threw a dart, and what ever name hit that wasn’t Skrull or Kree would work.
You know what. I’m fine with that. All this really showed was how obsessive compulsive we are on the internet about shit. We have to know RIGHT NOW what something is, and when people act vague about something, we go apeshit. So the last year of sleuthing and second guessing has pretty much been for naught, unless you called the Chitauri. But even then, you were still kinda wrong.
Oh well, Avengers looks like it’s going to kick ass anyway, so who care.
