In news that’s a surprise to no one, Bob Igar, Disney CEO has announced that his company is now in development of The Avengers 2. What with it making $207 domestic in three days, and probably wiping away the blemish of John Carter’s box office disappointment, of course this was going to happen.
So what now? Marvel is already gearing up for Iron Man 3, Captain America and Thor 2, with the possibility of a new Hulk movie. There’s no way an Avengers 2 is less than 24 months away. Kevin Feige has stated that all of those previous films need to happen before another Avengers can go forward. But I have a sneaking suspicion that Disney is going to be a bit more forceful seeing the truck loads of cash coming in at the second, that they’re going to want a new Avengers sooner or later.
On top of that, there’s the question of bringing back Joss Whedon. Normally, I’m for changing up directors and writers, but when it comes to the Avengers, Joss needs to be in charge for as long as humanly possible. He needs to start pulling a Chris Nolan and making demands now to get what he wants done so that Marvel and Disney will play ball with him on more Avengers.
But that’s just me.
