Interesting indeed
Adapting Japanese properties seems to be the new rage at the moment. Warner Bros is working on All You Need Is Kill with Tom Cruise. Hell, they’re also working on Bleach. Shane Black is set to make Death Note after Iron Man 3. And Keanu Reeves has shot a fantasy version of the 47 Ronin. So why not go for broke?
Don Murphy, the guy who produced the Transformers film, is looking to keep that robot train rolling. He’s optioned two Japanese books that are basically about robots. The fist, The Lords of the Sands of Time is about time travel and alien robots. But the second one, the one that seems to be moving forward, is far more interesting. Mardock Scramble, a story of a young prostitute who was nearly murdered, and brought back to life as a cyborg to do dirty black ops work, has attracted Shoot Em Up director Michael Davis to helm.
Mardock Scramble is quite popular in it’s home country, and is just racially androgynous enough to be adapted for a western culture. The story of a young cyborg girl killing bastards in a near future is ripe for a big budget film. But it has to be that, big budget, It’ll look like crap is it’s given anything under $20 million. Knowing the kind of movie that Shoot Em Up was, I think that Mardock Scramble can be something really damn fun, and the start of something possibly big.
Mardock Scramble is still so damn far early in the process that it’s probably going to be a few years before we even hear anything of it. Until then, watch this bit of animation and wonder…
