So, have you recovered from San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC)? Even if you weren’t able to attend the event, the amount of energy and information that comes out of SDCC is a lot to digest. Now that a few weeks have passed, it’s time to start looking ahead at some of the very best conventions in August.
Here are my top five cons of August, 2012 (Note: DragonCon will be part of the September Cons-of-the-Month):
5. Geek Girl Con: Seattle, WA (August 11th-12th)
Geek Girl Con is a young star rising on the con scene. This year will be only its second show, but it already is attracting talented guests and attendees from all over the country. For those that are unfamiliar with this convention, it is meant to specifically celebrate all things related to geeky girls. Despite this gender-specific theme, the show does entertain both genders. In fact, Greg Rucka is even a featured guest this year. For more information visit http://www.geekgirlcon.com/
4. Star Trek Las Vegas: Las Vegas, NV (August 8th –12th)
As always, August brings the biggest Star Trek show in the nation to Las Vegas, Nevada. Like a religious journey, each August Star Trek fans from across the globe gather in Vegas to revel in a 4-day Star Trek spectacular. This year, the show will have packed schedule of events that celebrate the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In addition, Sunday will feature a gathering of all of the major captains (minus Patrick Stewart) on the main stage to discuss their roles in the universe. Although Creation shows are a bit pricey relative to other cons, the guaranteed seating in panels and relaxed nature of the event makes the show well worth it. I am among the thousands that make the journey to Vegas each year and this year will be no different. For more information visit http://www.creationent.com/cal/st_lasvegas.html
3. Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con: Chicago, IL (August 9th-12th)
Although Wizard has become a con-machine over the last few years, their Chicago show has become in many ways the standout of their offerings. Not only does the Chicago show feature amazing guests, panels and exhibitors, but it also has the fortune of being situated in one of the greatest cities in America. This is definitely the type of show that attracts con-goers from afar so that they can both enjoy the show as well as the city. Keeping in line with past successes, this year’s show will feature some heavy duty guest: Stan Lee, William Shatner, Bruce Campbell, Neal Adams, Greg Capullo, George Perez and Humberto Ramos to just name a few For more information visit http://www.wizardworld.com/home-ch.html
2. Fan Expo Canada: Toronto, ON (August 23rd-26th)
Although Fan Expo Canada is celebrating its 18th year, this is a show that has s=historically been overlooked by many in con-goers in America. As the show has continued to gain steam, its 2012 offerings prove that this can no longer be the case. Whether you’re looking for comics, sci-fi, gaming, anime or just general entertainment, this show has it all. Nearly every franchise imaginable is represented in an overflowing guest list that includes such notable iindviduals as Patrick Stewart, Stan Lee, Kevin Smith, Neal Adams, Greg Capullo and John Carpenter. In addition, this show has tons of panels, cosplay and autograph sessions as well as a special exhibit of the Art of Frankenweenie. With 3 full days and a Preview Night, Fan Expo Canada is quickly rising to the top of the con universe. This is definitely a show that I would make an 8-10 hour drive to attend and am considering the flight out for in 2013. For more information visit http://www.fanexpocanada.com/
The Con-Fluence Pick of the Month:
1. Star Wars Celebration VI: Orlando, FL (August 23rd-26th):
To take the top spot in one of the busiest con months of the year, you need a show that brings something special. So, how about a show that celebrates the most iconic space opera of all time and only occurs every few years? Unlike most shows that are located in a specific city and happen as a yearly event, Star Wars Celebration moves locations (although this is the second year in a row in Orlando) and varies years of celebrations. Although there’s been much speculation that we’ll see Celebrations become a yearly event, for now there is no Celebration VII on the calendar so that is the nation’s one chance to come together to celebrate all things Star Wars for the foreseeable future. Due to the gravity of Star Wars Celebration, it is the ideal global event. CVI will feature guests from all corners of the Star Wars universe as well as attendees from all over the earth. If you don’t go for Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Clone Wars reveals or the numerous parties, you should go for the community and the spectacle. This is definitely one to make the 10 hour drive or to heavily consider the plane ticket. For more information visit http://www.starwarscelebration.com/
