The CW brings Wonder Woman to TV with AMAZON

Because everyone loves an origin story.

So it would appear that the CW is finally doing what I hoped they would do since Smallville was given a greenlight: make a before-she-was-famous Wonder Woman television show.

According to Vulture, the CW, Warner Bros. TV and DC Comics are currently in development of a Diana of Themyscira origin story which is tentatively being called, Amazon. This will be an origin story in the same vein as Smallville, as in she’s not Wonder Woman yet, guys. No tiara, no bracelets. The OC and Young Avengers writer Allan Heinberg is currently working on the script which, of course, is a huge leap from David E. Kelley who wanted to sell us on a whiny Wonder Woman that stayed at home with her cat and pinned over some guy in between destroying the original Wonder Woman costume and eating pizza.

All of this sounds AWESOME since this is what I’ve wanted from the very beginning but…

Vulture: “It should be noted that CW is only developing a script at this point; no pilot production has been greenlit or even contractually guaranteed.  (The network, along with WBTV and D.C., declined comment) But if a pilot is filmed, and a show gets ordered, it will be a major accomplishment for WBTV and D.C., since rebooting WW (outside of animation) has proven challenging in the three decades since the campy Wonder Woman TV series wrapped its three-year run on ABC and CBS in 1979.”

I will still keep my hopes up the Heinberg and the CW will do this show justice. My worry is that 1) the audience will soon get real sick of comic book heroes and where will that leave our Amazonian princess? and 2) They will hire some lame actress that doesn’t do the part justice.

And, if Heinberg and the CW are listening, ahem, don’t forget the importance of the supporting cast. It’s not all about Diana. The most exciting aspect of this show will be the Island of Amazons! Play up whatever Amazonian friends and foes Diana has. Bring in Artemis! Bring in Circe! Bring in crazy gods that just want to fuck with them! Have lots of fighting scenes!

In my opinion Smallville was awesome. If some of that magic trickles down to Amazon it will be a fantastic show. *crosses fingers*
