Confirmed: Big bad for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and AVENGERS 2?

Marvel weaves it’s non Spider-Man produced web.

James Gunn is on board to direct The Guardians of the Galaxy.  That film is going to be nuts but in a good way.  Here’s the thing.  The Guardians have always been a huge B team at best.   There’s got to be a reason for Marvel to want to do a feature film version of what are essentially cult favorite characters.  Turns out there is.

It’s all about the bigger picture.

If you saw Avengers, you know that Thanos was revealed at the end of the credits to be the mastermind behind Loki’s army.  Joss Whedon and Marvel have plans for the mad titan to be the big bad for Avengers 2.  But that means to build him up comic book style, he’s going to need a little more screen time before he clashed with the Avengers.   Enter the Guardians.

With the Guardians bouncing around the universe, presumably after the Infinity Gauntlet that Thanos holds dear, it would make the perfect setting to introduce the space Marvel U into the films, and build Thanos.   Even if he isn’t the main big bad in Guardians, but like Avengers, is pulling the strings.  Though I assume more of Thanos would be shown than a brief cameo.

Mind you, all this comes from Thanos’ creator Jim Starlin comments at the Montreal Comic-Con via Cosmic Book News.   I would say it’s safe to say that even if Marvel denies this at the moment, he’s going to be in Guardians and definitely in Avengers 2.
