80′s fans rejoice!
I was never fully aware of Captain Power as a kid. Ironically, one of my favorite toys as a child was from the series. The bird like sentry, which played out in many a battles with my Dino riders mind you. I wasn’t fully educated on the show until I attended Power Con last year and my fearless editor in chief George went apeshit over the announcement that the show was coming to DVD. He then proceeded to drop some Captain Power science on me and school me in all things Soliders of the Future.
Turns out that the show was created by one Gary Goddard, director of the He-Man movie from the 80′s. That film, I love dearly. But that’s besides the point. Turns out Captain Power still has a very loyal fan base that’s beyond the interactive toys. And that loyalty has given Goddard and his company the means to ressurect Captain Power as a new hourly show called Phoenix Rising.
The official statement from Goddard to Aintitcool about the status of the new show:
Goddard Film Group’s producing team of Gary Goddard, Roger Lay Jr and Eric Carnagey are working with former Paramount Television Senior Executive Jeffrey Hayes, who was responsible for such television hits as STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION, FAMILY TIES, and CHEERS, to bring back Goddard’s Sci-fi Cult classic CAPTAIN POWER AND THE SOLDIERS OF THE FUTURE in the form of a weekly one-hour drama series titled PHOENIX RISING. They have enlisted writers/producers Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens to develop this next evolution of the series. Recent television credits for the Reeves-Stevens include creating the new science-fiction drama series PRIMEVAL: NEW WORLD, the North American spin-off of the UK hit PRIMEVAL. They also served as writers/producers on STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE for Paramount and RACE TO MARS for Discovery.
More details will be revealed soon…
Sounds like they’re going to be giving the series a bit of the new Battlestar Galactica shine to it. Which, from what I’ve seen of Captain Power, that reboot owes a bit too. Goddard is a man full of ideas that I’d love to see come to fruition, and it looks like he’s getting his chance to. Stay tuned for more.
