Trailer: THE EVIL DEAD (Red Band)

Is its groovy at all?

I was open to giving this Evil Dead remake a chance.  I was open to see what Sam Raimi saw in remaking his first film.  I was open to see what Diablo Cody and director Fede Alvarez where conjuring up.  Now that I’ve got a taste of it, I ask.. Why?

Watch the red band trailer, then read on.

Now for my two cents.  I’m glad that the visual cues that Raimi created are in this film.  They are a strong part of what made Evil Dead, well Evil Dead.  But here’s the thing.  What’s the point if this film is basically retreading the first film (a classic, but not the best of the series), but on a budget without the Ash character?  Mind you, this looks a lot better than most of the stuff Platinum Dunes puts out (I say most, I’ve actually enjoyed some of their remakes) and the gore factor is nice to see in a mainstream movie for once. That being said, why? Aside from Sam Raimi and co possibly having developed a taste for money by going back to the well, and instead of moving on to making an Evil Dead 4 on their own.

It’s a bit of a quandary.  If The Evil Dead does well at the box office, that might mean that horror could be done with a hard R edge again.  But it would also mean the continuation of remakes.  Seeing as that was going to keep going on anyway, I wish Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell would have signed off on that Freddy vs Jason 2: Here comes the Broomstick, with Ash fighting the two all those years ago.

The Evil Dead opens April 12, 2013
