Comic books have always held a very special place in my life. I’ve often said it is only because of comics that I learned to read. Growing up in a non-traditional family setting, that featured many years of homelessness and nearly no time in elementary school, it was the world of DC and Marvel that shepherded me. It was through the wonderful pictures in these comics that I gradually learned the relationships between the words and the images. I’m not sure of the exact moment I began officially reading, rather than just looking at the pictures, but I’m sure Steve Rogers and Hal Jordan were present. Continue reading

In addition to being able to count on Retro Outlaw Studios for the best in pop culture mash-ups, another consistent is their awesome contributions to the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) exclusive scene. If you’ve followed SDCC the last few years, you probably remember their Clockwork Orange exclusive busts and statues which were consistently featured on SDCC “must have” lists. So, when I was contacted by Chris Santoro, famed “Outlaw” himself, about plans for their 2012 SDCC exclusive, I wasn’t shocked to hear it was awesome. That being said, as high as my expectations are for Retro Outlaw, this year’s exclusive might be the best yet. For 2012, Retro Outlaw will be releasing the ultimate in mash-ups as they take infamous Star Wars bounty hunter, Boba Fett and cross him with iconic daredevil, Evel Knievel to produce a 12” vinyl “Evel Fett” figure (cane included!)! Remember that awesome retractable lightsabre emerging from your 1977 vinyl-caped Darth Vader figure? What about that yellow knight and his flying ostrich from your favorite Atari 2600 game, Joust? If you were a child of the 70′ or 80′s (or wish you were), you definitely need to plan a trip to the American Icon art show at the iam8bit Gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibit by Jason Brockert opens this Friday, November 18th with a reception frm 7PM-10PM. In addition to his features of vintage Kenner Star Wars and Atari games, Brockert also reminds us of the simpler times of Collecovision, Commodore 64, and a Transformer world that doesn’t yet know the touch of Michael Bay. Stop by www.iam8bit.com for more details.
