Our friends over at Nukethefridge.com were invited to the Paramount press screening for Star Trek earlier tonight and have just posted a review. I have to say I am very happy to hear that this movie is all I am expecting and more. I mean if Jason over at Nuke the Fridge liked it then damn it can’t be bad at all.
By now you have probably heard the statement that “this isn’t your father’s ‘Star Trek.’” And as cliché as that statement is, it is also incredibly true. The “Star Trek” I remember was more a cerebral journey; much more philosophical than action oriented. I have always been a fan of “Star Trek,” especially the adventures of the original crew of Kirk, Spock, and Bones. So I went into this with some trepidation that this new incarnation would not live up to the past, and without many expectations that this would be the great film so many of my friends thought it might be.
But despite the fact that the movie doesn’t quite feel exactly like “Star Trek,” I can not deny that this is an extremely well made and entertaining movie. Director J.J. Abrams does a masterful job of revitalizing a franchise that has fallen stagnant in recent years. He has crafted an all-out, balls-to-the-walls action film. From the stunning and poignant opening sequence in which we see the tragic circumstances that bring James T. Kirk into the world, to the final climatic battle between the starship Enterprise and the Romulan mining vessel captained by the crazed villain Nero, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat.
The ingenious thing about this movie is that it manages to both be a reboot and part of the original cannon all at the same time. Writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman have crafted a story that pays homage to the original series, and through the use of the original Spock (Leonard Nimoy in a performance that is a bit more than just a standard cameo) propel this new “Trek” into an alternate reality from the original “Star Trek” storyline. I won’t reveal exactly how they pull this off, but trust me it is completely believable. And because of this plot device, you don’t have to have any previous knowledge of the “Star Trek” universe to understand what is going on. This new film is completely accessible to non-fans as well as hard-core Trekkers.
